Yvan Rodic
30 September 2009

Street style blogs are one of the great online phenomena of the past decade. They have become a core reference tool for fashion houses and designers who monitor them for global inspiration and to learn how trends are being adapted on the street - and all without leaving their desks. Yvan Rodic, the photographer and creative behind the facehunter, gives the reader a window into the edgier side of street style. Rodic cut his street-styling teeth at The Cool Hunter, where he delivered many unique moments of inspiration direct from the pavement; the kinds of startling images that eluded many of the other most popular style blogs.

His latest venture is a new site, proudly under his own name - Yvan Rodic. Essentially a travel diary, Rodic documents the interesting people he meets in all sorts of places. We know we're biased but we believe Rodic's talent extends beyond the camera lens.

His eye for inspiration and cool is so finely honed that he could apply it to anything - be it design or art direction The new Hedi Slimane perhaps? Maybe. Watch this space. - Bill Tikos

Photographer Thom Kerr
04 September 2009

Living in the “slasher” generation (photographer/designer/model) has meant that many creative’s are fortunate to mix their various pursuits together.  Thom Kerr is best known as a fashion photographer however his diverse background showcases a true creative, unique thinker. One could go so far as to say his creative/business style is like that of Baz Luhrmann (create the concept, write, execute/photograph and produce).

His style has the polish of an art director, the creativity of a designer, the execution of a cinematographer and the freshness of an emerging artist.
Having studied Fine Arts with a Film Degree in Brisbane, Australia, Thom initially began as a writer and director.  Feeling a calling for the fashion industry, Thom began creating shoots by styling and art directing, however became increasingly frustrated with the lack of photographers who were able to articulate his “visions”.  Thom began to learn how to shoot himself so he could control his concepts from start to finish in 2005.

Known as a “performer” with a “wicked sense of humor” Thom is a true eccentric, drawing new and upcoming artists toward him. His photography style is constantly evolving; “I master something then move on - it's very important to me that I develop a style that isn't just a replica of international photography. In Australia - we are a little scared of heading in new directions... “ he says.

His thorough understanding of the entire production process has enabled Thom to have a diverse client base of editorial, advertising and fantasy work.  Thom has worked in New York and LA for some time and exhibiting works in Japan, Italy, Australian and New Zealand.  Editorial clients include; Oyster, Karen, Cream, Black, Poster and Kurv with Advertising clients like Wish Clothing, Lost Apparel, Warner Music, Caltex, Ivy League Records.  - Kate Vandermeer

Photographer - Paco Peregrin
20 July 2009

Many photographers walk a fine line between commercial work and artistic fulfilment. Society has a way of condemning those in the creative fields that “sell out” when working in advertising or with a recognised brand, but little do they know that often a bigger brand, means a bigger budget and depending on the client, this can mean that the photographer can think and create on a much larger scale and see the results enjoyed by a larger population.

One such photographer who has managed to blur the lines between honouring his artistic vision and creating some truly unique pieces of work for well-respected brands is Paco Peregrin from Almeria, Spain.  Having studied a BA of Fine Arts at Seville University in Spain, Peregrin’s photographic career began after dabbling in the theatre, painting, design and communication disciplines.

Peregrin began creating his own style of photography, melding all of these creative experiences together with a keen commercial eye. Following the latest fashion trends with a penchant for acidic colour and transformative make-up, Peregrin’s style is conceptual to say the least. Each image is thought of with both a photographer and art directors’ eye, providing startling results that pop from the page, screen & billboard.

His client list is diverse and at times surprising, showcasing his desire to work across many products, services and styles; Nike, Diesel, Adidas, Lee, Gant, Mazda, Toyota, Levi’s, Carlsberg and Cosmopolitan TV, Peregrin has also shot for magazines like Glamour, Zink, Rolling Stone, Vision, Vanity Fair, Neo2 and recently won a Gold Lux award in the fashion and beauty category in 2008. He exhibits his work regularly and has become a recognised personality of the Spanish Community.

As if this variety of work wasn’t enough to satisfy his hunger of creative expression, he also regularly holds Fashion Photography workshops in Spain for up and coming students, proving a strong business head can co-exist with creative expression!  -  Kate Vandermeer

Photographer - Steven Klein
21 April 2009

Steven Klein is what we consider an Art scientist.  He approaches his photography, whether editorial, advertising, moving image or portraiture with the same focus – “I am more interested in the alchemical reaction that occurs when elements are brought together in a space.”  His images are exploratory in nature with subject, location and theme.

In this shoot, Steven has dipped into the sci-fi world of fantasy and emerged with a variety of images that have so many components that they provide a true visual feast with the fashion being one element. The first image plays on the Star Wars Robots theme with a slightly satirical look at how robots could help you go about your daily gardening! The second reminds us of the Mask of Zorro and an exotic couture bat cave complete with designer clad bats hanging from the ceiling! The third shows how science merges with art in an image that could be likened to the brainwashing laboratory in Zoolander!

Whether wild and far-fetched or realistic, Steven Klein has made an incredible impact on modern fashion documentation. - Kate Vandermeer

Photographer - Tony Duran
18 March 2009

Coined “the most famous non-famous photographer in the world” is quite a title but Tony Duran truly does live up to this. The chameleon of the fashion & celebrity photography world, Duran moves seamlessly between commercial glossy magazine covers to obscure S&M inspired editorial.

With sensuality and an obsessive eye for flesh, Duran confronts gender roles and challenges stereotypes of what is considered sexually explicit and high art without a trace of vulgarity.

Working with GQ, Glamour, Flaunt, Rolling Stone and Curve, the human form is arched, entangled and moulded in a variety of intoxicating images creating a visual feast to set the hormones racing!   Kate Vandermeer

Photographer - Jeremy Liebman

Photography is the study of objects and human life seen through the eyes and perspective of another human with a skill in being able to capture a moment in time. Jeremy Liebman is such a photographer and approaches his still life, landscape, portraits and fashion photography with a thoughtful, often ironic and humorous approach focusing on details to help differentiate his work.

His style is clean, uncluttered and contemporary whether in black and white, using subtle shadows or bursts of colour.  Form, shape and movement are key signatures of his fashion repertoire.

Now living in Brooklyn, New York, Jeremy's work boasts a varied and prestigious line of clients including Blender, Details, Glamour, Marie Claire, Nylon, Vice, Surface, Coach, Miu Miu, Prada, W Hotel and Marc Jacobs to name a few. - Kate Vandermeer

Photographer - Andrea Klarin (Grace Jones)
19 November 2008

It would take a bold and confident photographer to work with Ms Grace Jones – she of the panther like qualities and iconic outlandish style! Andrea Klarin seems to have created not only a working relationship with Ms Jones but also a truly collaborative experience with startling results. Ms Jones prowls across the studio space commanding your attention with her dramatic poses and facial expressions.

With a series of masks and headwear upon which to reveal herself or hide (who really knows with Ms Jones) the look is couture dominatrix!  Yugoslavian born Klarin (now based in Paris) brings a highly stylised and extravagant approach to this shoot showcasing his ability to think big and think imaginatively allowing the muse to create the interest and not be distracted by a setting or location.“I don't try to represent the reality but I try to filter it and through the imaginary world with some elegance and glitter!”

Klarin’s pedigree is finely tuned and credits his abilities to working with highly talented teams. He has worked with couture houses, commercial brands, high end glossy magazines alike with clients like Valentino, Lanvin, Rochas, L’Oreal, Vogue, Harpers, Instyle and Nike to name a few. - Kate Vandermeer.

Iconic Photographer - Yu Tsai
30 July 2008

The ability to capture a personality on film is no easy task. Few photographers are able to delve that bit deeper with their model and convey the theme of the shoot as well as the model's unique attributes.  Photographer Yu Tsai (based in New York and LA) is one such photographer.

His celebrity profiles for magazines like Arena, Harpers Bazaar and Flaunt,  portray a refreshingly new perspective of each star. There is something tangible, raw and honest about these shoots that strips away the celebrity status and makes the voyeur relate in an appreciative manner.

Working with the new breed of celebrity that favour a slightly anti-Hollywood lifestyle, Tsai has managed to shoot Sienna Miller, Bijou Phillips, Cat Deely, Topher Grace, Ewan McGregor and Ryan Gosling to name a few. It seems the creative pursuit of portraying movement as well as still photography are equally as successful for Tsai.

He cut his teeth at the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena which is where he discovered his passion for pursuing a creative concept to reality. He also directs commercials and films alongside his advertising work with Avon, Samsung, Puma and Neiman Marcus and can switch between black and white high octane fashion with Chanel's Paris Collections and colour saturated old style glamour with Guess. - Kate Vandermeer

Photographer - Justin Cooper
25 June 2008

Photographers - Magazine Issue

The master of lighting, Australian-born Justin Cooper produces fashion photography “as a representation of desire”. His ability to transform women’s faces into modern workings of art is punctuated with irreverent post producttion. Referencing iconic imagery from eras gone by, Cooper always surprises with his slick, highly stylized photos, often working in black and white.

He canvases the skin, like a cinematographer longingly frames a landscape; with inquiry, narration and an anthropological viewpoint.

Procured for his stunning beauty work and featured regularly in Australian and Europan publications like Harper’s Bazaar and Deutsch, Cooper is now based in Paris. - Kate Vandermeer
