Vogue UK - Unbelievable Fashion
13 November 2008

Shot by Nick Knight, this Avant Garde tribute to decadence and artistry within fashion by Vogue UK is inspiring and a great homage to the talented individuals that transcend mere clothing!

As you would expect to see, the names are iconic and offer flights of fantasy and unique perspectives on what constitutes their creations; Galliano, Viktor & Rolf, Alexander McQueen, Comme Des Garcon, Hussein Chalayan, Dior, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Gareth Pugh and Thierry Mugler.  These creative visionaries have documented moments in time like modern artists or architects.

Their ability to transform mere cloth into garments was titled “Fantastic Fashion Fantasy” and this captures the mood perfectly. -  Kate Vandermeer

Vogue UK – Tales Of The Unexpected
11 November 2008

If ever there was a meeting of the weird and wonderful imaginative minds, Tim Burton and Ronald Dahl would be a match made in heaven.  Burton directed “Charlie and the chocolate factory” and produced “James and the Giant Peach” and seems heavily influenced by the surreal and talented Dahl with his affinity for the macabre and dark underworld of children’s books.  Such is his influence in the creative world that Vogue UK commissioned a shoot featuring Tim Burton in front of the camera this time and accompanied by his muse and wife Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton and Jamie Bell.

Shot by Tim Walker this particular series of images is inspired by Dahl’s successful short story collections titled “Tales of the Unexpected”.    It’s hard not to be swept away with the childlike dreamy themes and the larger than life props interspersed with quotations from some of Dahl’s famous books.   The choice of mixing models with actors adds another dimension to the shoot as much of the brief is about acting up and character homage rather than mere poses.

With James and the Giant Peach, UK model Karen Elson sits in a makeshift hot air balloon ride hovering above an English garden with the Giant Peach above her and musician Lightspeed Champion poses in a comical tartan suit looking like a mad hatter next to an extract from Charlie and the chocolate factory.  It’s rare to find such creative, inspiring adaptations brought to life in a fashion magazine and we applaud the visionaries at Vogue UK for publishing it.  -  Kate Vandermeer

Numero 97 - Mommie Dearest
20 October 2008

In an unnerving nod to all things ladylike yet menacing, this shoot by Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello seems inspired by the late 60’s sitcom “Bewitched” and the heroine “Samantha’s” style.

With polished, coiffed hair and make-up, model Siri Tollerod has the perfect expressionless face with Revlon red pout and an evil glint in her eye!  Donning the “ladies who lunch” style for the season, Samuel Fancois has selected fitted blazers, country house checked skirts, demure lace shifts and floral tea party dresses and adorned them with pearl necklaces and “estate” jewellery.

Perhaps the most unnerving element to the shoot is the “mini-me” children and dummies that best explain the shoot title “Mommie Dearest”.  Created to mimic the Mother figure in dress and expression, these tiny versions add a sombre and surreal tone to the shoot making it stand out from the cookie cutter versions so commonly showing the “ladylike” trend.  -  Kate Vandermeer

Numero 97 – Bang Bang
14 October 2008

Picture a Bond Girl on an acid trip into the pop-tastic world of the 1980’s Mannequin movie featuring Kim Cattrall and then blend this all together and you have the “Bang Bang” shoot by Miles Aldridge for Numero 97 magazine. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, Aldridge has created a stylish heroine in Masha Novoselova that fights the good fight against the deadly and dangerous neon femme-bots!

Using shiny textures including rubber, spandex, satin and high gloss patent heels, the sharp black bob and 60’s style make-up is dramatic yet chic when worn against the candy graffiti backdrops.  -  Kate Vandermeer

W MAGAZINE – Love/Hate
02 October 2008

Linda Evangelista and Steven Klein prove a dynamic team yet again with this shoot for W magazine titled “Love/ Hate”. Like a photographic documentation of the trials and tribulations of a relationship, Steven Klein sets each scene to portray a different emotion; passion, betrayal, anger, longing, remorse and ultimately murder!

The power play between the two central characters show visible tension that is so artistically portrayed by Linda and her young toy boy. Klein is the master of creating a “story” with his work, and this shoot is no exception.

The fashion is carefully selected by Camilla Nickerson using highly stylised outfits from the crème de la crème of luxury fashion including Chloe, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Miu Miu, Prada and Christian Lacroix. With a fashion palette of black, white and metallic finishes, the accessories add the extra costume feel with killer heels, dripping jewels and bondage style leather gloves. - Kate Vandermeer

Zink Magazine - Because I'm a blond
25 September 2008

Like a fashionista in space, this series of super slick images are inspirational, unique and highly stylised, indicating the level of creativity behind both the team and Zink Magazine for commissioning the work.

Photographer Mike Ruiz with stylist Emma Pritchard have worked with designers Phillipe and David Blond to create a memorable shoot that utilises light, shine and reflection to advantage.

Each model is draped in jewels, warrior cuffs and extravagant costumes paying homage to the era of “Thierry Mulger”. High shine make-up gleans behind a dramatic bowl cut hair as the models pose like Zen Space Goddess’s. – Kate Vandermeer

Clear Magazine - White
23 September 2008

It’s a lighter shade of pale in this shoot by Clear Magazine to balance against the macabre dark romantic trend that is so strongly showcased this
season.

Cosmetic nudes blend with crisp white to lend a much softer feel but not without packing some serious punch in the textures and silhouettes.

With a mod silver blonde sharp bob, the look sways between little girl lost  in a Burberry feather dress to a provocative cheeky swimsuit to TSE high waisted full pants with billowing blouse. – Kate Vandermeer

POP Magazine - True Faith
22 September 2008

Oh Lord won’t you buy me a Prada Lace Dress? Pop magazine hears your prayers this season with their holier than thou lace collection.

Adorned by Nun’s habits and the rosary cross necklace, the only other accessory required is true faith!

Photographer Sebastian Faena has brought out the inner angel in models Natalia, Agness, Jourdan and Amber with a unique perspective. Miucca Prada is the fashion editor and has shown her latest heavy brocade style lace collection to its true advantage in this shoot. It’s Divine Inspiration! – Kate Vandermeer

Zink Magazine - Fowl Play
19 September 2008

Using the theme of animal inspired textures, Zink Magazine have commissioned photographer Hama Sanders for the shoot “Fowl Play”.

Stylist Nikko Kefalas combines textured over the top outfits with feathered headdresses and stylised wigs. Shot in an old barn complete with cages, the look is dramatic from head to toe with artistic make-up and hair complimenting the extreme outfits.

Often representative of bird like poses, Models Sara and Natalie’s alabaster skin contrasts beautifully against the earthy colour palette highlighted with mineral golds, decaying browns and antique creams.

Perhaps the hero image to encapsulate the whole theme of the shoot is the scene where the model appears like an exotic blackbird trapped lying in a cage with her full feathered skirt plumped around her. – Kate Vandermeer

Vogue Italia - The Honorable Daphne Guiness
18 September 2008

A “muse” can be many things – an individual who inspires creative process, an icon that influences a designer or artist and a multi-talented free-spirited person who seeks to live life to the full.

Each of these descriptions fits the intriguing and always stylish Daphne Guinness.

A style icon, journalist and collector of haute couture, Ms Guinness is the epitome of a modern heiress and socialite. Talented, curious and creative it’s no wonder that Steven Klein wanted to shoot Ms Guinness for Vogue Italia.

In a dramatic shoot where the heroine is held hostage at gun point and watches as a fellow model is burned on the pool lounge, it takes a strong character to live up to the fantasies created and in each shot and that she does!

Fashion editor Patti Wilson indulges Ms Guinness in her love of couture with extravagant pieces adorned by stacked jewellery and extreme accessories. The effect should be over the top, but surprisingly it all just works on the Honorable Daphne Guinness. – Kate Vandermeer

Clear Magazine - Second Skin
16 September 2008

Fashion can reveal or disguise and often completes both goals in one outfit! For this shoot by Clear Magazine titled “Second Skin”, the theme is about fabrics that act as a second layer of skin instead of “fashion” as such.

Using fluidity, transparency, layered tulle and fine pleating, against nude bodysuits, fashion editor Gisela Castillo has compiled a unique array of clothing that encapsulates this desire to cloth the skin in another layer that is equally as comfortable and tactile.

Photographer Ishi brings this realisation to life in a series of black and white and palely lit images that seem to caress the viewer with their 3D feel.

The models poses are emotive and dramatic and pull in the viewer with their powerful presence. – Kate Vandermeer

Vogue Italia - The New Warriors
16 September 2008

If you mixed Salvador Dali’s unique landscapes with Star Wars costumes, you might just come up with the theme for Steven Klein’s creation for Italian Vogue titled “The New Warriors”.

With a colour palette of polished concrete grey, ox blood red, lead silver and sterile white, this shoot is a bizarre artistic scene acted out in a barren mountainous landscape.

With coiled layered body conscious silhouettes, the shoulder reigns supreme allowing an air of austerity and power.

The styling by Patti Wilson is inspired as the textures merge and contradict each other. Fur sits atop of high waisted leather pleated pants, woollen dresses plaited like kneaded dough reveal liquid Lycra leggings and jersey polo neck dresses are adorned with S&M bracing.

The hair is at once exquisite and tongue in cheek – a fancy French chignon is crimped in bundles of twists and knots to juxtapose against the severity of the fashion. – Kate Vandermeer

Vogue (France) - Rock Couture
15 September 2008

Starring the fabulous Agness Deyn, “Rock Couture” is given the royal French Vogue treatment. The style is avant garde rock, slick hair, 80’s eye shadow and strong lines.

You won’t be seeing any safety pins, air guitars or tattered old rock tee’s here.

This is Rock Couture after all. This shoot pays more than an obvious homage to the likes of David Bowie and Grace Jones with the structured poses, larger than life clown silhouettes and emphasized cheekbones.

Agness Deyn proves her worth as the model of the moment with her striking bone structure and emotive eyes. – Kate Vandermee

W Magazine - Kate Hudson
12 September 2008

The Kate Hudson we know and love is generally portrayed as a 70’s Woodstock loving rock child. Boho, free spirited and uniquely stylish. For W magazine,
