One understands why there was such a fuss made about the “supermodels” of the 90’s when one peruses the fabulous Christy Turlington doing her thang! At age 39 and having stepped away from modelling to pursue her own yoga body wear and eastern skincare range, Christy proves that grace, style and iconic beauty never age.

She brings a more mature, wiser and fitter energy to this revival. Looking strong, lean and powerful (thanks to the yoga no doubt!) Christy works the “Champion” theme for W magazine to her advantage in a series of bold and commanding poses reminiscent of Helmut Newton.

Shot in black and white, photographer Michael Thompson has captured the inner gladiator in Christy (a style we are not used to seeing her conjour up for the camera). With confronting S&M styling from Camilla Nickerson, the fashion wraps, moulds, stretches and bandages the body in a revealing yet protective manner assisted by warrior cuffs, corsetry style belts, latex stockings and thigh-high lace up boots.

The hair styling by Eugene Souleiman has been inspired by tribal trends; from severe twisted pony tails to self braids and plaits. The style is slick, no-nonsense and artistically functional. We hope this is not a brief re-visit to the camera that so longingly aches to capture the stunning Ms Turlington! - Kate Vandermeer
