Vogue Italia - The New Warriors
16 September 2008

If you mixed Salvador Dali’s unique landscapes with Star Wars costumes, you might just come up with the theme for Steven Klein’s creation for Italian Vogue titled “The New Warriors”.

With a colour palette of polished concrete grey, ox blood red, lead silver and sterile white, this shoot is a bizarre artistic scene acted out in a barren mountainous landscape.

With coiled layered body conscious silhouettes, the shoulder reigns supreme allowing an air of austerity and power.

The styling by Patti Wilson is inspired as the textures merge and contradict each other. Fur sits atop of high waisted leather pleated pants, woollen dresses plaited like kneaded dough reveal liquid Lycra leggings and jersey polo neck dresses are adorned with S&M bracing.

The hair is at once exquisite and tongue in cheek – a fancy French chignon is crimped in bundles of twists and knots to juxtapose against the severity of the fashion. – Kate Vandermeer
